It’s Saturday afternoon and I find myself in the office, bookwork, hot chocolate and listening to Oxford United versus Blackpool F.C. on Radio Oxford.
I’m reminded me of some local trivia about the Rose and Crown’s next door neighbour, the late Stanley Rowlands.
Before he died in late 1999, he told me that as a young man, he had worked at Blackpool FC, I think as the club secretary and was often referred to as one of the the 3 Stanley’s.
The other two were:
Stanley Mortensen (26 May 1921 – 22 May 1991).
Joined Blackpool as an inside-right in 1941.
He made 317 appearances and scored 197 goals.
Scored a hat trick in the “Matthews [FA Cup] Final”, Blackpool v Bolton (4-3).
After retiring Mortensen returned to Blackpool as manager between 1967 and 1969.
and
Stanley Matthews (1-Feb-15 to 23-Feb-00).
Joined Blackpool as a winger 10 May 1947 for £11,500, at the age of 32.
Matthews spent 14 years at Blackpool after joining the club from Stoke.
He made 440 appearances and scored 17 goals.
He won FA Cup against Bolton in 1953.
In 1956 Matthews was named the first ever European Footballer of the Year.
.
I can find no information to corroborate Stanley Rowlands dates or role at Blackpool F.C..
Does anyone have any additional information about the ‘3rd Stanley‘?
Andrew Hall, the publican, would love to learn more about our Stanley, he was truly a gentleman.

I THINK this picture might be Mortensen and Matthews, 1935?
Incidentally, Oxford United beat Blackpool F.C. today, 1 – 0, with a Jonathan Obika goal in the 80th minute.
