A few hundred yards from the Rose and Crown stands the very grand former parish church of St. Philip and St. James, know in these parts as ‘ Phil and Jim’ and now used as the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies.
Designed by architect George Edmund Street , it was constructed 1860 – 1862 with the tower and spire completed in 1865.
This means there was much development of north Oxford at this time.
The first house on the Rose and Crown site (we call “the Cottage”) was built in 1862 , the Rose and Crown building itself was probably built in 1863, at the same time as the church, but both were completed before the tower and spire of the church.
Busy, busy, eh?
I learned this from an Oxford City planning application – https://www.oxford.gov.uk/planning-applications/view-comment-track-planning-applications, click on the (View and comment on planning applications) button, and search for 24/00537/LBC.
The first minister to run the OCMS, the delightful reverend Christopher Sugden, who, for me unexpectedly I recently saw on the “Who’swho” page of Cumnor parish church. Cumnor is a few miles west of Oxford. As a youth Andrew spent much of his life in Cumnor, and the Cumnor Youth Club that was adjacent to the church and led by youth club leader and local boy, Nick Harris.
