We were saddened to learn of the passing of Henry Dean, he passed on the 30th September 2022.
Henry was a gentleman, very private, thoroughly engaging, friendly and loved a chuckle.
Henry, along with his friend the late Percy Lewis, was one of Oxford’s most famous boxers, With Henry as head coach, the pair ‘tutored’ the Oxford University Boxing Team (OUABC), winning 17 Varsity Matches in a row, the longest single stretch of victories in the history of the tournament.
Henry was an elegant man, to whit I seem to remember that Henry ran one of the trendy’ clothes shops in Oxford when I was a youngster.
One summer Henry very kindly ‘took the reins’ at the Rose and Crown allowing us, Andrew, Debbie, Adam and Annabel to take a summer holiday.
Henry was the steward of the university sporting club bar, Vincents. I recall Henry ringing me at the Rose and Crown, to tell me there was a clash of 4 or 5 senior university events all playing ‘at home’, at Oxford. This meant that Vincents would be packed! … and with Henry short of staff, would I be able to go and give a hand. I turned up at the required time and the bar was already busy. I stood behind the bar but could see no prices. “Henry”, I enquired, “where is the price list?”. “Andrew, just charge the same prices as the Rose and Crown, that’ll be fine!!”, he said with a big grin on his face.
Several years later he was himself a publican, when held the license of the Watermans Arms on Osney Island for 7 years.
Our sincerest thoughts and condolences to his family. Henry will be fondly remembered.
RIP
